DVD Reviews: Desperate Housewives Season 1, Fresh Prince of Belair Season 2
Desperate Housewives Season 1
Well, the hit of the 2004/2005 season was pretty good. Actually, for me, it took a few episodes before I could get into it. The first four episodes or so weren’t all that great, but the show certainly got better as the season went along. I despised Lynette (Felicity Huffman) at the start of the season, but thought she was great by season’s end. Bree (Melrose Place’s Kimberley) was great as the Stepford wife, while Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) was smoking. My least favourite has been Susan (Teri Hatcher), who’s character has been absolutely despicable… she steals, has been breaking-and-entering three times (and encouraged her daughter to do so once too), performed arson, backstabbed, and vindictively gone out with men whom she promised she wouldn’t… desperate? More like jailbait… And the weird thing was that she thought she was too morally good for an ex-con? What kind of bizarro world is she living in? Well, the weird world of Wisteria Lane, of course. It was a fun season that reminded me completely of Melrose Place, but with great integration of characters and plot, and even effective use of children, which is always tough. Great start to the show. Amazing it’s only been one season. (8.5/10).
The Fresh Prince of BelAir Season 2
The Fresh Prince second season saw a few of the classic episodes, like the one where Will gets a job as a pirate waiter to pay for the Prom, the one where his Aunt’s sister marries a white guy (Drew Carey’s Deitrich Bader), the one where Will plays in the basketball championships and the one where Will goes on a gameshow with Carlton, Jazz and Tyriq. A decent season overall, but there were a ton of weaker episodes too… This season saw tons of guest stars too: Tisha Campbell, Malcolm Jamal-Warner, Milton Berle, Dr. Dre, Bob Eubanks, Raven-Symone, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Queen Latifah, Bell Biv De Voe, and Amen’s Anna-Maria Horsford, among others. Personal favourite from this season was the one where Will gets the pirate job, but there’s other good moments too. Overall, not too bad, but definitely some snoozer-episodes too. (7/10)
