Do you hear the people sing?

Went to see Les Miserables yesterday at the Canon Theatre… what a fantastic musical. I saw the Les Mis during its first run in Toronto way back probably close to 15 years ago now, when Colm Wilkinson originated the role of Jean Valjean. It resonated in my mind as my favourite musical, and yesterday’s performance totally supported that assertion. The performance of Randal Keith was fantastic. Les Mis extended its run in Toronto for two weeks only because they were scheduled to go to New Orleans during this time. The performers came out after the show to take donations to the American Red Cross and the International Red Cross for relief efforts in New Orleans and in South Asia. They actually stopped the applause at the end of the show to talk about it candidly too. Classy. Very classy. I was very impressed. Anyways, Les Mis will be strumming through my head for the next little while…

Recent movies: Shopgirl (2005) is Steve Martin’s attempt at writing a weird screenplay (a la Lost in Translation). The result is a great performance by Clair Danes, but a pretty subpar movie. It had its moments. Clair Danes is a glove counter girl at Saks Fifth Avenue, who is courted by the MUCH older Steve Martin, as well as Rushmore’s Jason Schwartzman (sp?), who plays a VERY odd guy. Some funny stuff in there, but it’s really really slow, with hard-to-relate-to characters, leaving you kinda lost, and wanting a lot more. (3/10).

Oh yes, and I heard an interesting sermon yesterday on the paganism rooted in celebrating Halloween... personally, I disagree, but thoughts? Are we promoting paganism by celebrating this ghoulish holiday?
