Pregnant ladies...
Last night, I had a pleasant dinner with my university friends Heather and Edna over at Baton Rouge... Mei was too sick to join us unfortunately... we usually get together every few months... this time was quite interesting given Heather's now 7 and a half months preggers... Heather, you look great by the way!... the most interesting thing I learned about last night was about Lamaze (sp?) classes... those were always a mystery to me... like why does it take so many classes and so long to learn how to breathe? So that was cleared up pretty quickly... I never knew all the little different things they teach you or remind you of in those classes, like when you should go to the hospital, what you should expect, what your husband should do, what exercises you can or can't do, good massage techniques, what different drugs do... basically it's a pregnancy-for-dummies course. I find that pregnant women also suddenly have a whole new awareness and knowledge of human physiology and biology, as Heather was spewing out all kinds of facts about spinal chords and the stomach and human development, which were all way above my head (i'm definitely not anatomy-inclined), which is somewhat unusual for me, since I'm pretty good in most other subject areas (biology and US politics are definitely my two worst Jeopardy categories)... anyways, it was quite fascinating...
naming babies is a whole-nother topic area we went through... i have no idea what i'd name my kid... heather was complaining that andy (her husband) wouldn't let her name the kid any name he'd heard of unless it was named after a family member... so like, "what about Ronald"... "nope, i knew a ronald in high school"... I think most guys are like that though, because I could totally see myself saying the same thing... and you don't want to name the kid the same name as one of your friends, since they'll think you named it after them... nor do you want a super-common name, otherwise there'd be 10 Christines or Sarahs in their class... but then you don't want a super-unusual name like named after a state (Dakota, Montana) or something else, or an ethnic name that doesn't match (like Diego or Vincenzo)... too many factors... and even when you decide on a name, odds are you'll probably change it anyways... i'm still glad my parents decided to go with Jay instead of their original choice, which was Peter... I don't think i'd be a good Pete...
Anyways, speaking of pregnant women, happy birthday Mandee!!!
Boo to the Raptors who lost to Phoenix last night... I'm done with the recaps for now... Don't want them to dominate my blog... just bad playmaking decisions in that game. easily should have won that game in the first half, but they totally blew it...

The name "Peter" would NEVER have done you justice. Your parents' Christmas present needs to be double in size whatever you would have given them when we give thanks for their decision on your name.
And i know you said Canadian politcs were boring...i had assumed you meant "in comparison to US politics"! So i figured you knew about American pols....sigh. Oh well...not like we need lots of people like me, wasting our time following an entity in which we have no direct influence.
As for the Raptors...are there any glimmers of hope in terms of "once they get used to playing together, it'll be amazing", or "if we could only get rid of this player and pick up a player who brings THIS quality" type observations? i firmly believe the answer is to toss Babcock - the drafting has been so-so, the trades seem to have been crazy (except for the Mike James trade), and players in the NBA think management is crazy. But i've shared my anti-Babcock desires before....anyways, what's the one fat move they need to make?
The baby name thingy? i know i want a relatively unique name that means something. Easier said than done. Thankfully, i have about a billion years before i have to worry about that....

US Senators for $200 Alex.... HUH? WHO? that would be me with US Politics... =)
Raptors - they have a bright future actually in a couple senses. Chris Bosh is an exceptional talent that is getting better, and will be all-star talent soon IF he keeps up the pace. The new kids Charlie, Jose & Joey could also be solid (although now it looks like they would have been better off picking Channing Frye with the 7 pick and Charlie with the 16 pick). Babcock did well to do the Mike James trade. That was a steal. All his other decisions have definitely been quesitonable. Is there one fat move they have to make? I think there's a number of moves they have to make, but the big one is that this team cannot move forward with four centres sitting the pine, two perpetually injured guys (Eric & Alvin williams) and Jalen Rose on this team. So if you can suddenly dump 7 contracts and get back a starting defensive center and a consistent swing man, there's the solution. Short term, the only solution right now is a new coach and GM. I'm a Paul Silas fan, personally. The real problem though is the guy at the top... Peddie knows nothing... he's the reason Vince stopped trying and got traded. He's the guy we should be booing.
