DVD Reviews: 24 Season 6, 90210 Season 3, Veronica Mars Season 3
Some Catching Up!
24 Season 6
Kiefer’s back in yet another testosterone filled day… it’s a few years later, there’s a familiar president, Jack Bauer gets released from jail in China, and immediately goes on a hunt for some nuclear missiles… There was a lot of backlash on the show when they ignited a nuclear bomb in LA, but I think there was quite a lot more wrong with this season… Jack’s family storyline seemed over the top, and there was a lot of bad acting in the early episodes (particularly by Kumar, and the whole segments around Regina King)… the middle episodes focusing more on Jack and the regular team were far better, although there were far more questionable timing issues in this season than the previous ones… driving time in LA seemed to be almost nil, and as usual, there some impossible and improbable happenings, particular at CTU… SPOILER ALERT… getting taken over and then going freeing themselves, and then getting investigated by Homeland Security in a matter of three or four hours was just ridiculous at 3 in the morning… anyways, definitely not the best season to watch, and the last few episodes were pretty lame… quite disappointing overall, but still addictive once you get past the first few episodes… (5/10).
Beverly Hills 90210 Season 3
This is when 90210 started getting a bit spicier… Brenda and Donna head to Paris where Brenda meets Rick (Dean Cain) and pretends to be French, while Dylan and Kelly get really close… David starts his rap career (he sucks btw), and Steve becomes his manager… naturally fireworks erupt when Brenda comes back and runs into Rick… Dylan walks out on both Brenda and Kelly (and then hangs out with the Borg Queen), while Brandon dates a cute sophomore, Nikki Witt, whose ex-bf is David Arquette as a reject rocker. Kelly and Donna go out with a pair of nerds (one of which is Seth Green), Steve almost doesn’t graduate, Donna Martin gets drunk at the prom resulting in a big protest, and Brandon, as usual, falls for every girl he meets. A very good season… this is when 90210 was pretty edgy for its time, and was one of the most popular shows on TV… (7/10).
Veronica Mars Season 3
The third and last season of Veronica Mars saw Veronica and the gang all go to the same university and basically all hang out with the same people… hmmph… Veronica was getting a bit annoying in this season with her overwhelming dry wit, her father was out of sorts committing adultery and becoming sheriff again, and the mysteries got a bit sillier… For being brilliant, Veronica sure did a lot of stupid things too… the downfall of the show was probably the group of activist-feminists who were portrayed horribly, which really took away from the over message of the show… I still kinda liked this season to be honest, and was surprised that it was bad enough to get cancelled considering some of the other stuff out there… and plus the pilot for season 4 looked pretty decent too, but, oh well. Overall, it was watchable, but just not that great (4/10).
